Bramall Hall and Park in in snowy weather

ALTTEXT

Bramall Hall is one of the most magnificent half-timbered houses in the country. Once a family home, for many years it has belonged to the town of Stockport.

Until comparatively recently it was surrounded by countryside. Today it is in the midst of the pleasant suburb of Bramhall. It looks magnificent at any time of year, but during snowy weather it has a special magic.

I enjoyed coming to Bramall Hall as a child, and at night imagined the ghost stalking the house and making the floorboards creek.

Lyme Park hilltop trees

Lyme Park Trees

These trees above Lyme Hall, Lyme Park Cheshire are striking in the way they are silhouetted on the hilltop.

A path seems to lead between them and into the sky.

From the summit we can imagine the view over Disley and the Pennines and to the left, the Cheshire Plain.

Village of Astbury church and daffodils

village of Astbury The village of Astbury on the A34 near Congleton Cheshire has a picturesque layout with its unique church and spire visible over a triangular shaped green. In spring, the daffodils come out, providing a spectacular, and photogenic vista.

Astbury has many elements of a quintessential English country village. Unfortunately, the location is spoilt by the intrusion of cars and other road traffic. At rush hour, the green seems more like a roundabout, with traffic passing on three sides, engines revving, stereos pounding and horns beeping.

At these times the reality doesn’t quite live up to the dream.

At other times, the location is quiet and it’s possible to pick up the ambience and feeling of timelessness.
